COUNTRY LIFE

Vice Magazine gave this Worst Album Of The Month. Well, fuck you, Vice, because while I might have laughed when you said the Black Kids “SUCK HUGE PUS-FILLED BALLS” (it’s true, they do! They don’t drink water like us humans!), it’s totally mean to pick on a dude as sensitive as Scott Matthew.

I mean, people don’t realise, but that’s actually how he looks. He is so tender that he is SOFT FOCUS IN REAL LIFE. He’s a dude from Brisbane who I hear got forced out of town in the Great Anti-Fey Uprising of ’02 (of COURSE they didn’t report it in the mainstream media) and relocated to New York, which makes sense when you hear what he’s doing because he’s not shy about targeting the Rufus Wainwright/Antony demographic (AKA the gays) and you need to be in New York if you’re gonna lock that down.

Don’t let those comparisons turn you off, though, because I’ve always found Antony and the Johnsons snoozeworthy and the Wainwrights don’t really do it for me. On the other hand, this Scott Matthew album is excellent and I admire anyone who can make the jump from anime soundtracks (he worked on Ghost In The Shell and Cowboy Bebop) to baroque pop.

FACT: if the jump was a literal one it’d be a camp hop-step accompanied by air-punching and shouting “WAAAAAH!”

I saw this guy supporting Sia in the UK and he was amazing. Vice magazine, as funny as they are with their reviews, do tend to get it a bit wrong - especially if it's not their thing. I think he has a great voice.
