New music from the Flaming Lips is clearly always exciting. This time around, though, it’s even more so, because the three tracks from Embryonic that just leaked are really fucking good: the bubblegum psychedelia of the last two Flips records is in intact, but it’s been paired with a newer, more muscular sound. It’s lush and floaty, but also gritty and driving. OH, WAYNE. There’s also hints of a return to (hurrah!) the scrappy spontaneity of the band’s early records. Basically: Embryonic could be the sequel to The Soft Bulletin we were all waiting for. Fuck, this album is going to slay.
