MP3: Alps - Sail Away

Alps, aka Chris Hearn of Newcastle, Australia, has a substantial back catalogue across a variety of genres: lo-fi synth-pop, post-emo, ambient among others. But it’s on his latest LP, the forthcoming Alps Of New South Wails, that he seems to have a sound that fits. This, and others from the selection of jams from the new record that he sent through to us, tap into a particular vein of rambling, dappled, almost folk-inflected rock that’s heavy on the wistful vibes. Of course, wistful folk-rockers aren’t hard to come by, and what sets this aside is Hearn’s unpolished howl and the chiming, at times discordant guitars. It’s not fuzzed out or harsh, though; there are no production tricks covering up any songwriting shortfalls, just unencumbered melodic catharsis. Alps Of New South Wails, which could be the best thing Alps has ever done, is out February 20.
