EASY LISTENING
MP3: Chook Race - Vanilla Yogurt
The 60s pop flourishes on Vanilla Yogurt sound kinda incongruous against the super rough garage riffery that dominates this jam from Melbourne's Chook Race but they totally make the song. For sure! There's been kind of a wave of punk bands drawing on the sounds and melodies of the '50s in the last couple of years, but it's pretty interesting to see how certain Australian bands - I'm thinking in particular of The Twerps and Royal Headache and now Chook Race - are synthesising some of the hallmarks of 60s pop into their garage jammers and doing it in a way that doesn't seem obvious or cheesy. Chook Race recently opened for Ty Segall on his Australian tour, and with this track's easy melodicism and hilarious subject matter, you can see why.

The writer is totally fair, and there's no doubt.
