POWER NAP

Half of one of our fav Auckland acts Golden Axe, Chris Cudby has snuck this two track solo excursion out on the Crystal Magic imprint. The tracks are quite stylistically different from one another, with "Just Do It" occupying slightly cosmic, liquid-funk territory, and "Kiwi Blue" -- the soundtrack to Ashlin Raymond and Zhoe Granger's recent PB PR Boundless Energy show at Auckland's Ferari Gallery -- is a surprising breakbeat-driven warped-house number, with hints of Ferraro-esque post-internetisms.

I also wrote something about the Boundless Energy show for the Enjoy Gallery blog.

MP3: RQ Mix 005: Golden Axe - 2:40 MAKE A SANDWICH AND DRINK JUICE AND EAT CHIPS EVERY DAY mix

The mysterious and enigmatic Auckland duo of Chris Cudby and Dave King have been RQ faves since forever, so it's been super exciting to see them hit the "big-time" in the last 6 months with their Liquid Bacon album released through Czech-tastemakers AM Discs. We're always stoked on a Golden Axe DJ appearance here in Auckland and now this unique experience is available to the rest of the world via this two hour and twenty minute mix of weird pop, italo, funk and other fuzzy, golden classics.

GIVE ME REAL FOOD

Auckland's kings of scuzz get kind of "epic" on this cut from their new album Fantasy Footwork; letting those hijacked exercise VHS tape rhythms and joyous SNES riffs build up for a couple minutes before Chris Cudby's warped shouts come blasting through the receiver. There's this weird innate desire to dance and/or exercise to Golden Axe's music, but when I played this at a party the other night it was funny how nobody could figure out how to properly dance to it (but really wanted to) so they just kind of lost their shit. Been blasting Fantasy Footwork pretty heavily and I love how it sits perfectly alongside our favourite Peace Age dudes with their similarly skewed pop visions informed by video games, Garfieldisms, Angelfire websites and junk food. In my iTunes tags this album's genre is "Fun" - for sure.

DOGNAPPED

Golden Axe are a keyboard/waveform duo comprised of Chris Cudby and Daif Kent and they're pretty much my favourite New Zealand band around I think. These dudes have been kicking it for a while but have always felt a little bit elusive or intermittent, but anytime I manage to catch them live or hear a track somewhere I love to make that bold proclamation again and again. They're at their best on this new track FREE TIME; totally grin-inducing Gameboy melodic perfection w/ scuzzed-out keys and echoed vocal barks - perfectly accompanied by this Tim & Eric-style video (want that Garfield phone!) - this actually sounds and looks like lights through a smoke machine, flowers on a fake Greek plinth and day-glo "Leisure Zones".
