NEEDLE FINGERS
MP3: The UV Race – Gore Orphanage
It’s totally ridiculous, sure: the opening line’s “They say that it’s haunting / It’s not that daunting” and the rhyming doesn’t get any better than that, but it’s not like anyone’s going to care once they get an earful of the anarchic Contortions-esque mindfuckery. It’s a pretty interesting record, this: totally Aussie delivery that makes even Eddy Current sound like a city boy, and yet what’s going on here sounds closer to late ‘70s NYC art punk than Australian pub rock. The responsibility for that probably lies with Eddy Current, aka Mikey Young (who produced this album FYI), who’s basically single-handedly fought the war to make inner city indie fucks dig broad accents and it’s pretty great to see that becoming a trend, not just in a reversing-the-cultural-cringe way but also for the possibility that some day soon there could be kids outside Sydney and Melbourne getting down to Gore Orphanage’s sax squalls and blitzkrieg guitars.
