MP3: Fig Newlies – Backwards
So great to hear a local band picking up on that Pains Of Being Pure At Heart super melodic alt rock tip. Fig Newlies smash it, too, packing way too many vocal melodies and politely overdriven guitars into this perfectly produced demo. For me, at least, it’s an amazingly nostalgic sound: it sounds like all the best parts of growing up in the 90s, minus the production clichés and commercial radio aspirations that ruin so many of your high school faves when you go back and listen to them again. Fig Newlies have an EP coming out on the excellent Dream Damage label later in the year; disappointingly, the DD website says they’ve already broken up, but here’s hoping they reform for some launch shows?
