MIX: RQ Mix 009 - Howse
Recent Tri Angle signing Howse is beginning to make a name for himself on the basis of only a couple of EPs of bracing but ambient juke-inspired electronic music. The Providence, Rhode Island producer Nathaniel Oak's Lay Hollow EP - set to be released on June 25 - is busy and exploratory, and combines the frenetic rhythms of footwork with dark ambient textures and a disarmingly interesting approach to sampling the human voice, especially evident in the unsettling VBS.
His mix for us hits upon similar dark zones, featuring a genre-diverse array of tracks that flit between the club and other contexts entirely, that nevertheless maintain throughout a cold sense of distance and distrust.
