SLAY BELLS

MP3: Baby Jazz - Song For The Season

First new Christmas-inspired jam I've heard this year and it's a veritable Avalanche of joyous hip-hop/pop that is seemingly 100% uncynical towards $$$ and family festivity with vast hall dynamics and both Home Alone/cheap Xmas compilation throwback vibes. I think the nostalgic/family fun album art (by Elgin Braden) helps on this too.

DAYGLO OVERLOAD

Not sure how to categorise this (utterly brilliant) new jam from Sunglasses' Samuel Cooper; over the course of its twelve minutes and two seconds it morphs from Avalanches-informed cut-and-paste soul to tropicalia to minimalist funk, all while spitting out references to everything from video gaming to the golden era of Hollywood to the golden era of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It's hard to call it a song; it feels more like a mixtape, but not like any mixtape you've ever heard before. It's totally original, for one, and despite the sound combinations that seem odd on paper, it flows naturally. It's also relentlessly creative and as intriguing as it is danceable: totally worth the hefty download, if that's not clear already.
