REASON + SIN

MP3: Chelsea Wolfe - Halfsleeper

Lulling me into a half-dreamt and half-conscious state, pretty hypnotised right now by this new "intimate" number from perennial RQ fave, Chelsea Wolfe. I've likened her previous jams to all things black and foreboding but with "Halfsleeper", the sparse voices cooing and howling over strummed acoustics seem to conceal a veiled haze of purity that's trying to flicker through. Lifted from The Grime and The Glow, it's just one of many other ethereal burners we can now rejoice to as the folks at Pendu have finally set the record out into the world.

DOOM PATROL

Chelsea Wolfe - Pale On Pale

Srsly can't stop vibing to Chelsea's sounds right now and I'm down to get my DOOM on to this newie. It seems she's out to explore the most cinematic and visceral elements of her sound with mammoth echoes and sludge thick enough to drown in. Best listened to in bare flesh, while kneeling down in front of an altar in a candle-lit cavern, this jam revels in the kinda imagery that kept you up as a child with yr head tucked under the sheets.

PSSSST I've also got some news. This jam along with three new newies have just been added to the Ἀποκάλυψις EP to give it proper, full-length status. Peep the new tracks on Chelsea's Bandcamp page for yr listening pleasure ("Freidrichshain" in particular is like whoa). US folk can expect a vinyl release of The Grime and The Glow from Pendu hopefully some time soonish...

IT MOVES

Chelsea Wolfe / White Horse - Moses (Dub Mix)

Here's some amazingly nuanced middle-of-the-night music from LA's White Horse. Really feeling the all-black mood of their "Final Coordinates" record and in particular the shadowy contours at play on "Modern Heroes of Victimhood". Acoustics plucked with a hint of taut agitation rounded out with understated vocals and a muted bass rhythm which add to a tense but restrained atmosphere hinting at something...something out there lurking.

Oh, and Ben from White Horse also happens to play with Chelsea Wolfe, so if y'all still got the sublime "Moses" on yr brain, their brilliant dub mix adds some unforeseen head-boppiness to the darkened vibes.

EMBRACE

Chelsea Wolfe - Moses

Cocooned in black shroud, plaintive and forlorn while at the same time super-ethereal and reaching out for some sorta metaphysical understanding, I'm just stunned right now by this song from Chelsea Wolfe's Ἀποκάλυψις EP. Drenched in cathedral reverb and recorded with the intent to make my bones quiver, this is equal parts desire, silent-horror tension and consumed catharsis. Listening to this makes me want to stay up all night to find some sort of blissed-out peace in total darkness.
