New Wave hippies

Psychedelic Horseshit - Can't Get Enough 2

Psychedelic Horseshit have a very bad name but sound real cool. Apparently they got their name when they "got together on a lark to crash a hippie jam and conjured their name on a spur of the moment request", but seriously dudes, don't tell me you can't do better than this! Their recording is much worse, though; in fact, it wouldn't be hard to record music into my dictaphone that sounds better (actually, it would be hard for it to sound worse). It's all up in the high end, trebles piercing peaking. It's not secret that a veneer of lo-fi can make music sound way cooler or perhaps more authentic and it's true in this case; Magic Flowers Droned is an endearing record full of new sounds and textures (through bad adventures in hi-fi) and fun jams and sloppy aesthetics. It's mostly cacaphonic stuff but beneath all the junk on this track is a Strokesy sort of vibe which appeals to my sensibilities cos when I'm at my place of work (clothes store with white walls, minimalistic decor) listening to the shiny and light and fun jams (but hey not too superficial now) it's nice to come home and fill my headphones with trash. That's probably why I'm drawn to this music at the moment. It could also be that last night I went and watched Ben Lee live at the Tivoli, which was weirder than you'll ever know. Going to watch a band play just for the purpose of reviewing it is weird in itself but yeah, Ben Lee. Hmm. Anyway, it's not that Psychedelic Horseshit are a hugely difficult listen. Maybe it's like Bukowski. It's easy to read but raw and affecting despite it's simple style. Actually, maybe a lot of music sounds like Bukowski reads. Maybe Modest Mouse or Old Time Relijun have a similar swagger? Watered down, for sure, but influenced by, it seems fair to say.
