FRIENDLY FIRE

Oh, yes. This new single from dreamier-than-dreamy NY quintet Twin Sister bursts out with a skronking kraut groove but never gets the chance to math right out. Just as you're nodding and thinking, "yeah, man, I loooove the new direction" to yourself, the astral bup-bahs kick in, totally recontextualising the needling guitars and start-stop bass as tools of persuasively narcotic dreampop. There're the mildest hints of Moon Safari/dub here, but they're so masterfully incorporated it feels like a disservice to Twin Sister to mention them, especially since they never really needed to write another song after Ginger. It's totally lovesick and starry-eyed but in a productive, romantic kinda way (what?).
